COSEE Great Lakes Brings Great Opportunities

An impressive number of teachers seek opportunities to spend a portion of their summer break sitting on the other side of the desk – as learners. One such opportunity takes the form of a spot on the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) Great Lakes' roster.

Through COSEE Great Lakes, teachers have a chance to spend a week on the U.S Environmental Protection Agency research vessel, the R/V Lake Guardian, cruising the vast waters of Lakes Superior. Another set will explore Lake Huron while still others will head to the east end of the Great Lakes to explore Lake Erie from Stone Laboratory, the research facility on Gibraltar Island at Put-in-Bay, Ohio. Teachers can even apply for a marine immersion scholarship to study something as exotic as tropical marine ecology!

These opportunities (and more) are described at http://coseegreatlakes.net. The application deadline for the Shipboard and Shoreline Science Workshops aboard the R/V Lake Guardian is May 1.

COSEE Great Lakes works with many Sea Grant programs, including Minnesota Sea Grant, to bring educational opportunities to 4th-10th grade teachers and non-formal educators from the Great Lakes region.

COSEE Great Lakes is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Sciences, which supports a network of coordinated centers to facilitate collaborations and communications between ocean and Great Lakes scientists and educators. Blogs created by past workshop participants (http://coseegreat
) might be the best way to understand why teachers and non-formal educators are scrambling to get into COSEE's summer workshops.
