Making a Clean Beach

Sea Grant crew after beach clean up.

Minnesota Sea Grant staff members Doug Jensen and Sharon Moen (front), and Dale Bergeron, Valerie Brady, Debbie Bowen, Nick Zlonis, and Evan Heisler (back) cleaned up the notoriously contaminated New Boat Club Beach in Duluth as part of Great Lakes Beach Sweep 2006. Besides the arrow sticking out of Doug and 222 cigarette butts, the team collected 61 pounds of garbage as part of this event, organized by the Great Lakes Aquarium and sponsored by Sea Grant and other local organizations. To help keep cigarette butts from entering local waterways, Sea Grant plans to work on a project with several community groups.
