Staff Update

Jeff Gunderson has been named acting director of Minnesota Sea Grant. He has been with the Minnesota Sea Grant for 26 years. Gunderson was hired in 1979 as the program's fisheries extension agent and currently is engaged in fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood outreach programming. In 1996 Gunderson became acting associate director, and associate director in 1997 overseeing the outreach (extension and communications) component of Minnesota Sea Grant. He served as acting director for the program in 1988-89. Gunderson replaces Carl Richards who is now working as director of the Mid-Continent Ecology Division of the Environmental Protection Agency in Duluth.

Cindy Hagley, water quality specialist, is part of a team that earned an Award of Exemplary Online Learning Resources for the Water on the Web site during the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) International Conference, Nashville, Tennessee. MERLOT awards recognize outstanding online resources designed to enhance teaching and learning. Sharing the award are Bruce Munson (UMD); Carl Richards (formerly with Sea Grant); Rich Axler, Elaine Ruzycki, and Norm Will with UMD's Natural Resources Research Institute; and Glenn Merrick with Lake Superior College.

Sharon Moen, editor; Nick Zlonis, graphic designer; Debbie Bowen, information specialist; and Marie Zhuikov, communications coordinator, received an APEX Communications award of excellence in the book category for "Superior Science, Stories of Lake Superior Research." Communications Concepts, Inc., sponsors this international competition that recognizes outstanding content and the success of a publication in conveying a message.

Jesse Schomberg, coastal communities and land use planning extension educator, received $14,909 from Minnesota's Lake Superior Coastal Program for "A View from the Lake 2006." This project provides coastal residents with a view of coastal development along the shores of Lake Superior through rides on a research vessel and hands-on learning activities.

Zlonis has been promoted from Web/graphic designer to communication designer. He is responsible for design and development of Minnesota Sea Grant's Web site and special project Web sites, and designing the program's print publications.
