by Sea Grant Staff

Wendy Hieb holds a ring-billed gull chick for fecal coliform sampling on Interstate Island in the Duluth-Superior Harbor.
Wendy Hieb won the 2003 Hydrolab International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) award for best student poster. Hieb is a Sea Grant-funded graduate student working with Randy Hicks, associate professor of biology at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). The title of her poster was, "Identifying the Sources of Fecal Coliform Bacteria in Lake Superior Watersheds and Nearshore Zone." She earned the award at the IAGLR annual meeting held in Chicago, IL, from June 22-26, 2003.
Lesley Lovett-Doust, chair of the IAGLR awards committee, noted in her letter to Hieb: "This was a particularly strong achievement as the meeting included the greatest number of student presentations ever before, at 123." Hieb is working on her master's degree in the water resources program at UMD.
