DNR completes Lake Superior Boater Survey
July 2003
by Sea Grant Staff
Boaters using Lake Superior in the summer of 2002 were surveyed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The resulting report examines who boaters are and how they use the lake. The most common activities reported are fishing (60%), cruising (16%) and sailing (11%). The survey also solicited opinions about boater safety and the importance of safe harbors. About 31% of respondents have used a Lake Superior safe harbor in an emergency. Seventy-nine percent of marina-based boaters and 67% of public access boaters feel additional safe harbors are needed.
The 54-page report, which includes more information, is available on the DNR Web site.
