Between the time of peak physical development and spawning, the lengths and weights of adult native lampreys of both sexes diminish, due to fasting and degeneration of their digestive tract. Even the parastic silver lamprey fasts before it spawns, and can experience a 4-22 percent decrease in length and a 52-57 percent decrease in weight.
