Staff Update

Marie Zhuikov, communications coordinator and Doug Jensen, Exotic Species Information Center coordinator, were awarded first place for news releases in the National Association of Government Communicator’s (NAGC) Blue Pencil Awards. Their news release, “Goby Population Found in Duluth-Superior Harbor,” described how two teenagers discovered a thriving population of the exotic fish, the round goby, in the harbor during the summer of 1998 (see September 1998 Seiche for an article based on the news release). The award will be presented during NAGC’s annual communications school this May in Alexandria, VA. NAGC is a national organization for communicators working in national, state, and local government. Entries from across the nation and foreign countries are judged.

The University of Minnesota has closed the building that housed our Twin Cities campus Sea Grant offices. Barb Liukkonen, water resources education coordinator, and Connie Post, accountant, moved after water damage caused “sick building” syndrome by worsening a mold and bacteria problem in the building. Both of their offices are now at 173 McNeal Hall, 1985 Buford Ave., St. Paul, MN 55108-6044. Barb’s phone is 612-625-9256. Connie’s is 612-624-9239.

Anne Kapuscinski, fisheries and aquaculture extension educator, is one of 38 members of the newly-formed Advisory Committee on Agricultural Biotechnology. The committee will advise the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture on policy related to the creation, application, marketability, trade, and use of agricultural biotechnology.

Connie Haugen and Steve Lovejoy are interning with our Exotic Species Information Center. Connie is a graduate student at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Among various exotic species education projects, she is assisting with a survey to evaluate boater awareness and behavior regarding aquatic nuisance species.

Steve is an undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He is also assisting with the boater awareness survey and is handling data analysis and interpretation.
