February 2000
by Sea Grant Staff
Sea Grant’s contributions to an effort by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide reconstruction assistance in Central America in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch were cited by the Department of Commerce in a ceremony on December 7. Former Minnesota Sea Grant Coastal Resource Specialist Jim Murray (1976-1978), who is now the NOAA National Sea Grant Program Office Director of Outreach, was cited as part of the Department of Commerce’s silver organizational award to “Team Mitch.”
Murray and his group were cited for leadership “in helping to reconstruct Central America in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions of the team of NOAA and International Trade Administration persons who worked in the weeks and months immediately after Hurricane Mitch, to assist the region in improving its disaster preparedness and disaster response efforts, and to ensure that U.S. firms were well-positioned to play a major role as partners in the reconstruction effort.”
