The Hooked on Fish Recipe Contest, hosted by Northland's NewsCenter and the University of Minnesota Sea Grant College Program, has named its winner. Brenda Washnock, a Michigan native who lives on Michigan's Lake Superior shore, nabbed the top foodie's prize package, which includes a $100 Visa gift card and the opportunity to cook on the Northland NewsCenter's Today Show. Her winning dish, "Chipotle Grilled Fish Tacos with Cilantro Slaw," earned praise for its use of Great Lakes salmon and its distinctive and refined flavors.

Washnock, a Detroit-area native, traded in her nursing scrubs to be a mother on the shores of Lake Superior. Now that her youngest is ready for college, she started competing in food competitions nation-wide. A love for ethnic foods and a cultivated palette has put multiple titles under her belt. Among her wins are a grand prize from the California Avocado Growers' Association for her Haitian Black Salsa, a trip to the Duncan Hines test kitchen in New Jersey for her "Mocha Cupcake with Caramel and Sea Salt," and most recently a sixth place win at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas. Washnock's winning recipe is available for download.

The Hooked on Fish Recipe Contest encourages people to purchase and cook with sustainably managed and harvested fish. For more information about choosing sustainable seafood, see the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's FishWatch website at: www.fishwatch.gov.
