Shipboard and Shoreline Science Workshop

July 20-27, 2011
Lake Superior

Fifteen educators are cruising Lake Superior with Minnesota Sea Grant and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) staff through the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) Great Lakes. While aboard the EPA's research vessel Lake Guardian, the teachers will work beside scientists collecting data and learning about the Great Lakes as participants in this year's Shipboard and Shoreline Science Workshop.

More than 50 educators applied for the opportunity to further their own education and learn more about the Great Lakes and marine science. The cruise not only allows educators to work first-hand with scientists on research projects involving the Great Lakes and ports, but also gives them new strategies on how to integrate science into their classrooms.

Participants will focus on a range of topics such as coastal processes, plankton, climate change impacts, climate and water interactions, food chains, invasive and endangered species, and shipping and recreation. They will also collaborate with the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry through a live video conference connected to the Great Lakes Rocks coursework.

This is the fifth year that COSEE Great Lakes has organized the Shipboard and Shoreline Science Workshop. When organizing the workshops for teachers, COSEE Great Lakes has two main goals in mind: promoting Great Lakes and marine sciences in education; and creating positive, lasting relationships between educators and scientists.

COSEE Great Lakes Shipboard and Shoreline Science Workshops are supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under Grants No. 0528674 (NSF) and NA06OAR4170017 (NOAA). This Shipboard and Shoreline Science Workshop is co-sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and supported by the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network.
