Hang Lake Superior History on Your Wall With 2003 Calendar

August 19, 2002

Navy trainees lounge nonchalantly on ice ridges in front of their trapped schooner, sweethearts enjoy a Lake Superior beach from underneath an umbrella, two boys hang tight during a wild ice boat ride on the Duluth-Superior harbor. These are some of the thought-provoking and poignant images found in the Historic Lake Superior and Minnesota’s North Shore 2003 wall calendar. The 14-month, black-and-white calendar is offered for $10 (plus tax) from the University of Minnesota Sea Grant Program and its partners.

The images, carefully culled from archives of the Northeast Minnesota Historical Center, the Minnesota Historical Society, and the Lake Superior Maritime Collections at the University of Wisconsin Superior are combined with historic facts about the North Shore and Lake Superior, moon phases, and holidays (including some local favorites like St. Urho’s Day).

Historic Lake Superior and Minnesota’s North Shore is bound to give visitors and residents alike a remarkable glimpse of the pastÉand it’s for a good cause! Proceeds go into a special fund that is used to produce educational and scientific materials about Lake Superior. The calendar is printed with soy ink on recycled paper. Size when unfolded: 12-1/2 x 17-1/2 inches, with plenty of room to write out your busy schedule.

The calendar can be found at many local bookstores and gift shops in Duluth and on the North Shore, or you can contact Minnesota Sea Grant at (218) 726-6191, or by e-mail at seagr@umn.edu. View sample images and order the calendar online here.

Historic Lake Superior and Minnesota’s North Shore is a cooperative project between the University of Minnesota Sea Grant Program, Christie Printing Company, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center.
