Pygmy Whitefish (Prosopium coulteri)

Found in the depths of Lake Superior year-round, this fish doesn't bother with much travel. In fact, the only time it goes for a jaunt is during its spawning season in late November and December, and the distance to the nearest tributary isn't all that far. These petite, silvery fish likely enjoy this vacation, especially because of the food — glorious food — and spawning options. You see, other pygmy whitefish eggs are a main component of this fish's diet, although the pygmy will settle for aquatic invertebrates during the "off-season." Staying alive and staying put when predator fish are lurking about is a challenge, but the pygmy whitefish is up for it. After all, there's really no place like home.
