Bortone had three papers published: "Coupling Fisheries with Ecology through Marine Artificial Reef Deployments," in American Fisheries Society Symposium, 49:917-924. "Comparison of Visual Survey and Seining Methods for Estimating Abundance of an Endangered, Benthic Stream Fish," with Frank Jordan, Howard Jelks, and Robert Dorazio in Environmental Biology of Fishes journal, 81:313-319. "Insight into the Status and Trends of Tarpon in Southwest Florida through Historical Data Recorded on Scales," as a chapter in Biology and Management of World Tarpon and Bonefish Fisheries, pp. 69-77.
Bortone and G.J. Holt, and D. Engle had the paper, "Perspectives on tarpon, based on the historical recreational fishery in the Gulf of Mexico," published in the Proceedings of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute 59: 31-36.
Bortone gave the seminar, "An Approach to Establishing Aquatic Organisms as in situ Environmental Bioindicators of Natural Hazards," at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Mich., during January and for the University of Minnesota Water Resources Science program in St. Paul during February.
Bortone gave the presentation, "Lake Superior Research Priorities," for the Ask a Scientist speaker series in Grand Marais and Duluth during January.
