Liukkonen organized and hosted three workshops about harmful algal blooms in Minnesota lakes. The workshops were held in Sauk Centre, Mankato, and St. Paul, Minn., during March and were sponsored by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the Center of Excellence for Great Lakes and Human Health, and Minnesota Sea Grant.
Liukkonen was part of a regional team that received the national 2008 Outstanding Extension Program Award from Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES), for their work in assessing E. coli test kit reliability and training volunteers to monitor bacteria in streams and lakes. The award was presented during the CSREES water quality conference held in Sparks, Nev., during February. Liukkonen and the team also presented the workshop, "Volunteer E. coli Bacteria Monitoring," at the meeting.
Liukkonen gave the presentation, "Social Dimension of Private Well Testing," along with B. D. Severtson and R. Kline-Robach at the New England Private Well Symposium in Providence, RI, during December.
Liukkonen co-authored "Assessing the Impacts of Field Days for Youth" a presentation given at the Making a Great Lake Superior Conference 2007 held in Duluth at the DECC during October.
